Description
This exotic tropical delight with red flowers is called a gout plant or Jatropha podagrica, from the Euphorbiaceae family. It has many nicknames such as Gout Stick, Buddha Belly, Guatemala Rhubarb, and Tartogo. It makes a beautiful natural bonsai arrangement, too, and can grow to heights of 2-3 feet. It has a knobby, swollen stem with red flowers that grow in large terminal clusters. Photograph taken at Eureka Springs Park, Tampa, Florida.

wow, beautiful color contrast, gorgeous lighting and capture! Well done, Carolyn! Thanks for sharing it:)!
Carolyn Marshall replied:
Thank you, Xueling. These guys are really unusual. I haven't seen them again at the park where I shot them. They have been frozen out a few times and had to cut everything down to the ground. I guess these guys just didn't make it back.

Beautiful color, Carolyn, and like reading about this plant, never seen one, vote!!
Carolyn Marshall replied:
Thank you! Yes, for the longest while I couldn't find out what they were. Was tempted to upload them as "little watermelons". Figured I might get in trouble for that. But they do like like miniature watermelons on a stem. :-)
Carolyn Marshall replied:
I meant to say, too, that this is the way they look toward the end. They are the bright green like my previous shot. After they get these orange or red blooms, the gout starts turning brown.
