Artist's Description

The Boat-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus major) is a large blackbird primarily found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. They are a noisy bird. This Grackle is an adult male. Its plumage is mostly iridescent purple-black over its body (looking shiny blue sometimes), with its wings and tail appearing more of a greenish color. I have added a digital treatment to give it a painterly appearance.

I spotted this beautiful bird perched on a fence post at Medard Park, Florida. With its head bent down, it reminded me of a Bible scripture Matthew 6:26 telling us not to be anxious about anything in our lives. It says: "Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"

I have come to understand that what constitutes fine art stands apart from whatever techniques that we artists use to ultimately reach that special place. My...
